Four nine-year-old  girls, Lucy Byrne, Ellie Mannix, Cara Maguire and Isabelle Maramotti from Mary Help Of Christians, Navan road decided that they needed to respond to a major world event, and they didn’t do it by halves!

Upon seeing the tragedy that befell Turkey and Syria recently with devastating earthquakes leaving thousands dead and thousands more displaced, the girls felt heartbroken seeing so much human suffering; they had to do something to help. These girls have compassion, empathy, hope and above all, gumption, in spades!

The girls decided to host a Bake Sale to help those suffering in the aftermath of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. They planned, organised and executed the whole event by themselves and didn’t even enlist the help of adults! The girls called in help from their school, GAA and rugby team friends and they were even business-savvy enough to cut a sweet deal with a local coffee shop who donated some pastries and buns.

The Bake Sale took place on March 4 and initially the girls raised over €900 on the day, which itself, is an amazing achievement. But they didn’t stop there; word spread of the girls’ kind gesture and for the following week, they kept receiving more donations until they hit a total of €1,507.03. Then the cherry on top of the cake – the National Lottery added €500 to their efforts to bring the grand total to €2,007.

All the proceeds were donated to Concern, who were blown away by the decency and kindness of these young girls. They arranged for the girls to present them with a big cheque for their donation and said it was one of the biggest donations they have received from a group of young girls. Their efforts will help some of those people affected by the earthquakes, and above all, these girls are a symbol of HOPE for the future.
