THE AWARDS WILL BE BROADCAST VIRTUALLY ONCE AGAIN TO A NATIONAL AND WORLDWIDE AUDIENCE

The 44th annual ‘Press Photographer of the Year Awards’, the annual awards on the Press Photographers Association of Ireland, are to be broadcast live online once again this year, on Friday, 18th February 2022, in a specially directed awards ceremony presented by broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan. The awards, which are open to press photographers from across the country are traditionally announced at a gala awards ceremony that takes place in Dublin. However, due to the continued pandemic, the awards will be announced online again this year, showcasing the very best of Irish press photography to a worldwide audience.

The virtual awards will also feature special pre-recorded category introductory messages from a host of well-known Irish figures and personalities, who will highlight the tremendous work and skill of Ireland’s many press photographers.

This year saw almost 1,400 entries from 100 photographers across the ten award categories. Judging for the awards was deliberated online last weekend and was led by chair of the judging panel, former Irish Times picture editor, Frank Miller, alongside the two judges; International photographer, Eddie Keogh, who has over 35 years of experience at the forefront of sports photojournalism and is currently official photographer of the England Football Team on behalf of the FA, and Dublin native, Helen Healy who is Head of Pictures at the Financial Times and has been a picture editor for over 20 years. They were joined by the judges for the multimedia category, Philip Bromwell, Broadcaster and Michael Lee, former RTÉ cameraman.

Commenting on the awards, Paul Sherwood, President, Press Photographers Association of Ireland, said: “Our Awards recognise and reward the hard work, dedication and skill of our Irish press photographers who have persevered through another year dominated once again by the pandemic. Our members have beautifully captured all aspects of life throughout the year and created a stunning visual record of 2021. The judges had a very difficult task in selecting the winners and we look forward to revealing all next month at the Awards ceremony which will broadcast live via Zoom.”

The ‘Press Photographer of the Year Awards’ reward, celebrate and promote the very best of Irish press photography. The awards run across ten categories; news, daily life & people, nature & the environment, politics, sports action, sports non action, portrait, art & entertainment, multimedia and reportage, as well as the overall title of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland ‘Press Photographer of the Year 2022’.

The 44th annual Press Photographers Association of Ireland ‘Press Photographer of the Year Awards’ will be broadcast live on Friday, 18th February 2022 via Zoom.
