For Dubliners missing the simple joy of witnessing great plays in the full-theatre experience, many great productions and events can now be streamed online.
First up it’s The Gate Theatre as it partners with The Pavilion Theatre to bring to life The Visiting Hour by Frank McGuinness from Thursday 22nd April to Saturday 24th April, 2021.
Performed and recorded in the Gate auditorium, this world premiere will be streamed online to audiences around the world.
Written by Frank McGuinness during lockdown for the two renowned Irish actors Stephen Rea and Judith Roddy, this moving new play is about an Irish father (Rea) and daughter (Roddy) at visiting hour in a nursing home during the pandemic.
The play quietly observes a daughter visiting her elderly father in his nursing home. His mind is beginning to wander, but conversations about the past can be dangerous, and family memories can look very different, depending on who is telling the story.

Meanwhile following on from the sell-out run of Hamlet in 2019 and Romeo and Juliet in 2020, Mill Productions are proud to present The King Lear Project.
This is a FREE online resource, directed by Geoff O’Keeffe and funded by Creative Ireland, for Leaving Certificate English. Filmed over five parts at the dlr Mill Theatre, Dundrum, and with the theatre dark and programmes cancelled they moved online and engaged with the play by examining key scenes from it.

The Draíocht Theatre in Blanchardstown also has a great variety of artistic events for people of all ages to enjoy.
From Monday 1st March until Wednesday 31st March, there’s the #CreateAtHome – My Dream Day – Make your Own Animation Set with artist Genevieve Harden, an amazing workshop for youngsters to help you create your own Animation Set, complete with backdrop, props and a mini photo of yourself in the middle of all the action, on your dream day.
First a brainstorm to draw your perfect sketched background painting. Maybe a Hot Air Balloon Adventure? Maybe a Beach Scene? Or maybe a Giant Ladybird and lots of Giant Flowers? Enjoy drawing and painting your backdrop and adding in objects into your scene.
Genevieve will also show youngsters how to make a ladybird from plasticine to complete her adventure. You could carry on this idea and make your own stop motion movie afterwards.
Draíocht’s Family Art programme is ideal for ages 5-10 years.
