The Irish Youth Dance Festival (IYDF), returns to the Pavilion Theatre, Dún Laoghaire on July 1st, and 2nd. Now in its 22nd year, this highly anticipated annual event provides a unique and invaluable showcase for the work of leading national and international youth dance choreographers and dancers, writes Alex Greaney.

IYDF is a weekend long celebration of vibrant and diverse youth dance companies from Ireland and Europe.  The festival brings together young dancers (aged 12 to 25) with both established and emerging dance practitioners. Participating companies include local youth dance companies from across Ireland, professional dancers and choreographers from the Dublin Youth Dance Company’s (DYDC) alumni, and international guests including the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland (NYDCS) and its Artistic Director Anna Kenrick.

On Saturday, July 1st the programme will feature a host of diverse and wide-ranging works from the Irish National Youth Ballet (restaged by Jane Magan), Limerick Youth Dance Company and Malayalam dancer, Arya Ramalingam amongst many others. Performance highlights on Sunday, July 2nd include Laois Youth Dance Ensemble, Kildare’s KNC Performing Arts Academy, FYI Dance Club from Wicklow, and guest professional dance artists Mariela Mira (Brazil) and Mateusz Szczerek (Poland).

Festival host, Dublin Youth Dance Company will perform both nights with original choreographies by Millie Daniel Dempsey (Ireland), Monica Muñoz (Spain) and DYDC’s Director Mariam Ribón (Spain).
