Lucan Sarsfields senior footballers put themselves top of the Adult Football League Division 2 last week with a comprehensive win against fellow high-flyers Fingallians at 12th Lock.
The initial tussles were toughly contended with both teams anxious to claim the opening score. In the end it was a Brendan Gallagher point at the end of a Lucan move that gave the scoreboard its first action.
Lucan played a fast flowing brand of football and it wasn’t long until Stephen Garbutt doubled the home team’s account after seven minutes, which was answered by a Fingallians’ free following the breakdown of another Lucan attack.
However, it was between the 15th and 20th minutes of the match that the balance of this game turned in Lucan’s favour with a brace of goals from Gallagher and Ciaran McHugh.
The visitors continued to press and their efforts were rewarded with a high free count, three of which were converted before the interval, along with two points from play. Gallagher led the Lucan attack with a point from play and one from a free to leave the scoreline at Lucan 2-4 Fingallians 0-6 at the break.
Lucan continued where they left off in the first half with the first two scores in the second, the first coming from Gallagher, the second from James O’’Neill.
With 10 minutes to go, Fingallians pulled back a goal which left a mere two points between the sides. The large home support were encouraged to get behind their team and that extra support meant that Lucan were able to outscore their opponents four points to two in the last 10 minutes of the game, the final two scores coming from the boot of Garbutt, crowning a fine individual performance.
The result puts Lucan joint top of AFL2 with Cuala, with the Hyde Road side’s points scored being the only differential separating the teams, and the clash between the two table toppers not coming until September as the season draws to a close.
