Egan’s flying Foxes soar at Feile festival

AVA Egan’s surging runs and unerring accuracy, combined with Ciara McGoldrick’s devastating second half goal, powered Foxrock Cabinteely to victory in Division 2 of the Feile at Russell Park.
The south Dublin side trailed 1-3 to 0-3 at the break but they put together a superb second half performance to hold Plunkett’s scoreless, crucially shutting down two last ditch, close range frees that could have snatched a victory.
The Ashtown club had made much of the early running with Aine Donlon’s free getting the scoreboard rolling. Her point was augmented by Eimear Murphy with a fine score.
But Foxrock, and Egan in particular, served notice of the danger they could cause when the half-forward scored a brilliant point on the run from the right following a flowing move.
Plunkett’s, though, reasserted their control on the game with Roisin O’Neill Cunningham’s physical strength a feature.
Aoife Walsh hammered to the net from close range, reacting quickest after Murphy’s initial shot was blocked.
Egan’s free pulled a point back and she would get another first half injury time, counter-acting Murphy’s second point of the tie, leaving three points in the difference.
The tide turned significantly, however, in the second half. Saoirse Moloney’s surging run earned a free from a back-pedalling defence to give Egan the chance to kick over a free.
Then, crucially with six minutes to go, Jennifer Hamill brilliantly palmed a bouncing ball over the last defender into the path of McGoldrick who angled her shot into the top corner.
It gave Foxrock the lead for the first time and they never looked back.
Egan added a free to put two in the difference.
Plunkett’s threw everything forward in the last minutes, including a free right on the edge of the parallelogram but Donlon was unable to force a save from the masses on the goal line and the chance slipped by.
