Malahide United defender Glen Daly scored the only goal as the Ireland Amateur side scalped an Ireland U-20s selection in Whitehall.

An amateur side packed with non-league Dublin talent proved more than a match for some of the best young players the country has to offer

The single goal win will prove a massive confidence boost as they look to qualify for the prestigious UEFA Regions Cup action later this year.

The opening exchanges saw the U20s have much of the possession but found the Amateurs’ shape difficult to penetrate.

As half-time grew closer, Gerry Davis’ Amateur side began to threaten more with Killester Donnycarney midfielder Sam Burgess looking the most threatening. Then with seven minutes to go until half time the Amateur side took the lead.

A well-delivered corner was met by Senior Sunday player Daly who was able to head past David Odumosu.

Shortly after the break the Regions Cup hopefuls almost went two in front when another Killester midfielder Stephen Chambers’ well struck free-kick just went wide of the top left corner.

The U-20s had a great chance in the 75th minute. Joe Hodge received the ball on the angle of the area and following a swift change of feet, he went in search of goal but his attempt couldn’t find the top right corner.

Dylan Duffy almost equalised late on when he struck the post. The UCD player led a counter attack and sized up an

effort that canned off the foot of the upright.

Meanwhile, there was not much to celebrate for Dublin sides in the Leinster Junior Cup, as both Oliver Bond Celtic and Beechwood crashed out of the provincial contest.

Both sides lost out to top Kilkenny outfits and exited stage left after impressive runs in the competition.

Beechwood, who should be content with their upset run to round five, lost out to

Freebooters, while  Celtic, who fancied their chances of going all the way, will be disappointed they were defeated by Evergreen at the quarter-final stage.
