The holders are out.

St Mochtas’ grip on the FAI Intermediate Cup was loosened by a top-flight rivals Liffey Wanderers on Friday night.

The Pearse Street cup lovers claimed victory in the tie of the round and progressed to the final 16 at the expense of reigning champions.

One goal was enough to settle a tight and tense affair with Sean Noble claiming hero status for the 2017 winners.

The former Bray Wanderers and Ards goal-scoring midfielder struck with just 15 minutes to go, settling the all Senior Sunday clash in favour of the Southsiders.

Victory over the favourites means Deco Heavy’s men move to within three wins of a trip to the nearby Aviva Stadium.

The side they share a Ringsend pitch with flirted with registering a scalp of their own on the same night.

Senior Sunday 1 side St Patrick’s CY brought Senior Sunday league leaders Malahide United to penalties in Gannon Park.

The shock looked on the cards when CY stormed into a two-goal lead and took that advantage into the second half. However, one of, if not the best side in amateur football at present hit back and forced extra time. Penalties followed and regular go-to man Dylan Cashin stepped up to the spot and into the spotlight by scoring the decisive penalty.

Extra time or penalties weren’t needed as Pats CY’s fellow second-tier side, Lucan United made the last 16. The form outfit put seven past Munster Senior League side Castleview

Marco Chindea, Jamie Hollywood, Jamie Doyle, Gary Seery, and Anthony Kavanagh shared the goals for the Senior Sunday 1 league leaders in a 7-3 win.

Usher Celtic also progressed past Cork opponents in a high-scoring game. The reigning FAI Junior Cup champions registered somewhat of an FAI Intermediate statement with a nine-goal hammering of Park United.

Former FAI Junior Footballer of the Year Jordan Buckley accounted for five of the nine, while Wayne Walker, Cian Kavanagh and Calvin Douglas also found the net for the fourth tier intermediate side.

St Francis were another side that had no issue quashing rebel advances as they put six past MSL team Mayfield United. Dylan Stack and Ryan Coombes among the scorers for the John Hyland Park side.

Collinstown were the only Dublin side to win in Cork, a 3-1 win over Leeside easing the pain of a long round trip.

Regular goal-getter Ger ‘Horse’ Shortt helped them bolt into a two-goal lead, Damo Cuffe with the other after United had pulled one back.

Another man noted for scoring goals Davy Sullivan was on the scoresheet as last year’s semi-finalists Bangor GG defeated Edenderry by the odd goal in three, Rónán Ó hAinifidh scoring the other.

Bluebell had no trouble moving to within one win of the quarters by hitting four without reply against Larkview. Inchicore Athletic accounted for Leeds United at Ben Curtis Park with former LOI and Sky Sport’s ‘Next Football Star’ standout Craig Walsh scoring one of two late strikes.

Recent finalists Killester Donnycarney beat Templeogue United in the round of 32, while Keith Foy’s Kilnamanagh lost to Carrigaline.
