Harding FC2

Shelbourne SSC3

SHELBOURNE SSC made the short trip across the Liffey on Saturday morning for a date with Harding IF FC, in the UCFL Division 1 section, and left with three points in their pocket.

It’s a win that could kick-start Shels push for promotion as they have four games in hand over the leaders, but it’s four games they will have to win to get into the mix.

Saturday was nail biting as they left it late to secure the win, but I don’t think anyone would argue they didn’t deserved it.

They opened their account through Simon McSweeney when Finnegus Arias slipped the ball to him on the right and, after cutting inside, sent in a cross/shot that caught home keeper Vahan Tchrakian napping and it ended up in the net after 12 minutes.

It gave them the kind of push they needed to really get going, but for all their hard work Tchrakian proved to be too tough a nut to crack.

He kept them out with a series of great saves and his hard work paid dividends when on the hour mark Harding were back in the game when Henrique Fabris slotted home a Zack Hyland corner from the right hand side.

The goal rattled the visitors and with a bit more luck Harding might have taken the lead, however, Shels regained their confidence and with ten minutes remaining they regained the lead through an unfortunate own goal, to set up a frantic ending.  The home side dug deep and hit back minutes later, when Daniel Smith headed home a Dylan Orpen corner from the left.

But this was turning out to be a gane of twists and they was still one more to come before the final whistle.

With only three minutes remaining the visitors won a free kick, Bernard Smith stepped up and instead of shooting played the ball to McSweeney, who was in acres of space, and he slotted home the winner.
