Scouts and their friends of all ages enjoyed the first ever 200th Dublin Scouts Ballymun orienteering championships held in on a lovely sunny day at Poppintree Park on Saturday (June 22).

Three courses of differing distances  were on offer with the long one using the MapRun app recently installed in Poppintree Park with the  backing of Active Cities and Orienteering Ireland.

For youngsters, there was an orienteering maze, which they could explore on their own. Every child who completed a course got a medal, with plaques going to the winners and runners-up on the short and medium courses.

First home on the 2.1km medium course were Cian and Orna Lehane in 13 minutes 39 seconds. Second was Per-Olov Elovssen of the Fingal club in 13:51, who competed in the over 65 class. On the 1.6km short course, Scouts Ella, Jamie and Delphina, running as a group, were  first home followed by two experienced orienteers – 91-year-old Con Carroll of Three Rock Orienteering Club and then his 10-year old clubmate Freya Tilunas.

Thanks to Active Cities, permanent orienteering courses as well as MapRun courses using a phone app have been installed in Poppintree Park for all to enjoy.

Here’s to next year!
