St Mary’s 34

Old Wesley 29

To a neutral spectator this was a highly-entertaining match with nine tries and a dramatic finish.

For both sets of supporters it was a needle match with a nervous ending.

St Mary’s had the better of the opening exchanges and were first on the scoreboard with a 47-metre penalty goal after 5 minutes. They followed it up minutes later with a push over try from a maul off a line out penalty to take an 8-0 and by half-time they had secured the bonus point as they led  27-14. But Wesley bounced back in the second half to leed 29-27 only for Mary’s to kick on and claim the win.

Despite losing Old Wesley earned two valuable league point and in doing so qualify for the promotion play off. It is just a case of against whom.  There are lots of permutations but any kind of win next week against Queens will guarantee a home semi-final.
