Usher Celtic 2

Ayrfield United 4

An inspired Louis Franzoni helped send Ayrfield United flying into the third round of the FAI Intermediate Cup on Sunday.

Fabulous Franzoni scored two and set up another as United defeated Leinster Senior Cup finalists and Senior Sunday 1 league leaders Usher Celtic in the prestigious cup competition.

The sides traded blows in the first half but Aryfiled dominated against their Senior 1 counterparts in the second half to ensure progression.

Usher twice led in the opening period thanks to goals from Adam McMahon and Gary Gannon. However, the away side levelled on two occasions with Ciaran Walsh and Franzoni finding the net.

Ayrfield hit top form against one of amateur football’s form sides in the second half and took the lead when Franzoni’s cross was headed home by Sam Hayden at the back post.

Franzoni then wrapped up a much-celebrated win when he finished after being put through one on one. Usher attempted to find a route back into the game but came up against some resolute defending.

Elsewhere, Collinstown registered one of the shocks of the round in an equally dramatic fashion. The LSL Senior 1A leaders knocked out Senior Sunday table toppers Lucan United.

Former Ross County and Bohemians striker Kurtis Byrne, midfielder Dylan Clarke and Luke Kelly were all on target in a 3-2 Sunday morning win.

Marco Chindea and Jamie Doyle accounted for Lucan’s goals. Kilnamanagh were another to defeat divisional superior opposition in the national cup competition, getting the better of Crumlin United in the second round.

Ger Shortt and Ryan Masterson’s goals meant it was all square after 90 minutes with the Senior Sunday 1 side securing victory via spotkicks.
