The ‘Fearsome Four’ of Áine Maguire, Síle McIntyre, Jim Dwyer and Mary Lynch joined forces to travel cross country on Friday, May 24, for the inaugural Naas AC 5 mile race to celebrate the clubs 100 year anniversary.

Perfectly located in Naas Racecourse just off the the N7 with ample room for parking and access to comfortable facilities, there was a friendly atmosphere throughout and plenty of volunteers stewarding.

It was a calm, overcast, balmy evening making conditions perfect for the almost 300 runners gathering at the start line adjacent to the racecourse. The route was a two lap course along the lovely, quiet country roads of the Tipper Triangle with some gentle hills and plenty of supporters. Indeed at the half way point, a large crowd gathered to encourage and cheer us all on for the next lap “ a lovely touch that gave the runners a much needed lift.

The race was well organised and afterwards the volunteers put on a lovely spread of sandwiches and goodies washed down with hot tea – all greatly appreciated.  Wins were chalked up by Matthew Shirran (Naas AC) and Niamh O’Connor (Tullamore Harriers).

The Four all agreed that it was a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a Friday evening.

The organisers hope to make it a yearly event and it is definitely one for the diary.

An extra bonus was the fab complimentary yellow t-shirt and also the achievement of a few PBs!

Meanwhile, The 2024 Leinster Junior, Seniors and Masters Championships proved to be a rewarding event for Lucan Harriers with strong performances all round and a haul of gold medals that would make Usain Bolt blush!
