Athletics dream is edging ever closer in Dundrum

The ‘dream’ comes closer to fruition as Phase 1 of a massive new Multisport Campus that will play home to Dundrum South Dublin Athletics Club is all but complete.

Having successfully completed the due diligence phase with the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media to start drawing down part of the approved LSSIF €5.25M funding, work began at Tibradden Road, a 25-acre site DSD acquired between 2013 and 2015, this time last year.

12 months on and Phase 1,  which includes a fully completed World Athletics standard 400 metre outdoor 8 lane running track with all the field facilities for jumps – high jump, pole vault, long jump and triple jump – and throws – discus, hammer, javelin and shot putt-, and up to 2km of running trails throughout the campus to accommodate endurance running, is close to being completed.

With significant help from the LSSIF, which requires matched funding, Phase 2 should begin in the Autumn. The second phase will see a sports hall with changing rooms, offices, indoor sprint track and associated facilities installed.

The facility will be open to many many clubs from differing disciplines and is one a range of sports can benefit from. As a result the population of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown will have a top class multisport facility available to them in the foothills of the Dublin mountains.
