Women’s National League: Peas see off Bohemians

Peamount maintain unbeaten league It was anything but a Saturday stroll as Peamount United maintained their 100% start to the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division season with a hard fought win at a lively Dalymount Park.

Second-half goals from Karen Duggan and Kate Mooney bagged all three points for the Peas, a victory made just that bit sweeter having seen title rivals Shelbourne drop points earlier in the day, as the resolute and competitive Gypsie’s failed to score for the second home game running.

In the day’s early kick-off, Shelbourne suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat at home against Galway.

Shels got off to the perfect start when Jessica Stapleton gave them the early lead, scoring from a corner after just three minutes as she headed home from point blank range at the far post.

The hosts were unable to build on that lead, however, and Galway bagged put together a second-half fightback to grab the points which saw them turn the game on it’s head inside three minutes.

Aoife Thompson levelled for the visitors on the 56th minute when she took advantage of some mix-up in the Shelbourne defence to round the goalkeeper and slot the ball home.

Two minutes later and Galway had hit the front courtesy of an expertly struck free-kick from Jenna Slattery.

Shelbourne were handed a boost with just over 20 minutes to go when Gemma McGuinnes was sent-off for a second-yellow card but they were unable to force their way back into the game.

DLR Waves and Athlone Town played out a nil-all draw at the UCD Bowl. That reslt left both teams on four points with three games player.
