Leinster senior league: McCabe on target yet again with hat-trick for flying Kilmore

Intermediate football’s most prolific front man remains on course for 20 league goals before Christmas thanks to another goal-den display last weekend.

Kilmore Celtic’s sharp shooter Michael McCabe was hitting the target with regularity again on Friday night, bagging a treble to bring his tally to an astonishing 16 goals in 11 games.

Even more impressively, McCabe scored when it mattered most, finding the net three times in the last 12 minutes to inspire a sensational come from behind win.

It was a poachers performance to rival Dirk Kuyt’s famous 8 yard hat trick against Manchester United 2011, with all three goals inside the six yard box finishes.

Hartstown Huntstown took a two goal lead into the break thanks to an OG and a brilliantly dispatched peno. They held that advantage right up and until minute 78 when McCabe cushioned home a right wing cross. Soon after the Intermediate football’s highest scorer was firing home a rebound to level proceedings before he won a peno and earned the chance to win it from the spot.

The in form front man, who has a record his manager Shane ‘Mario’ Dolan, a former Irish League and LOI striker would be proud of, saw his effort from 12 yards saved but as if to prove his striker’s instinct was first to the rebound to prod home a late winner.

The win saw Celtic return to second spot in the tightest of the Intermediate title races with only goal difference separating the top three of Oliver Bond, Kilmore and Ballyfermot United – the three promoted sides – with Rush Athletic in contention three points behind and in fourth place.

Killester Donnycarney were the big winners at the other end of the Intermediate pyramid, as they put four past Crumlin United in the only Senior Sunday game of Sunday.

With the majority of the top flight in Metropolitan Cup action over the weekend, the Gary Howlet managed side moved up to third and to within three points of league leaders St Mochtas with an impressive win.

A brace from Robert Dunne, a set piece finish from Michael Kelly and a strike from Irish amateur international Sam Burgess secured them victory over the reigning champions.
