STACKSTOWN’S Padraig Harrington is being backed at prices as short as 5/2 with BoyleSports to add a second senior major to his roll of honour this week at the Senior Open.

BoyleSports has already cut the Dubliner in from 7/2  for this week’s Senior Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl in Wales after he played all four days at Royal Liverpool last week to finish 64th, just a month after he bagged his fifth victory on the PGA Champions Tour at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open.

Rounds of 73 and 77 for Darren Clarke means he missed the halfway cut at last week’s Open Championship in Hoylake, but he goes into the senior equivalent as a 28/1 shot to defend the Claret Jug he won last year when he held off Harrington’s challenge by one shot.

With prolific American Steve Stricker skipping the event and compatriot Stewart Cink preferring an appearance on the regular PGA Tour this week, New Zealander Steven Alker is rated second favourite at 11/2, with Bernhard Langer (8/1) and Miguel Angel Jimenez (10/1) also prominent in the betting.
