Thompson to head up cricket initiative in Tyrrelstown

by Stephen Findlater

MITCHELL Thompson will head up Fingal County Council Sports Office and Leinster Cricket’s efforts “to support the expansion and development of programmes in Tyrrelstown, Dublin 15”.

His appointment is part of the council’s commitment to supporting the growth of cricket in Tyrrelstown through the Cricket Development Team.

The Team has fostered the growth of cricket in Fingal’s schools and clubs, working with clubs during the Covid-19 pandemic to create safe and community-friendly sporting environments.

Thompson recently joined the Munster senior interprovincial squad, and is a first-year Sports Management and Coaching student at TU Dublin and YMCA club member.

His role commences in May for a six-month pilot period with weekly school coaching visits now arranged with Tyrrelstown Educate Together NS, Powerstown NS and Le Cheile secondary school.

Speaking about his new role, Thompson said: “Development coaches helped me take my first step into cricket for which I will always be grateful.

“I am honoured to have been selected for this new exciting role to help develop cricket in Fingal. I hope to engage as many young people as I can to make that first, life-changing step into cricket in the Tyrrelstown community”.

Mayor of Fingal Councillor. David Healy added: “Fingal has a rich history of cricket, and the work of the Sports Office in partnership with Leinster Cricket has seen the game continue to grow. I look forward to seeing the Tyrrelstown cricket community go from strength to strength.”
