IT PROVED a successful All-Ireland girls’ championships for Mulhuddart Boxing Club as Chloe Gabriel impressively claimed her second All-Ireland title in a row at the National Boxing Stadium last Saturday afternoon.
The 13-year-old puncher, who first laced up the gloves in the Dublin 15 based club aged 10, put in a top class performance to claim the gold in the 46kg girls’ category.
Last year, the talented young boxer had also claimed the All Ireland crown in the lighter 44kg weight category.
On Saturday, the Mauritian born fighter dominated her Tullow Boxing Club opponent Leah O’Brien and won out after three rounds by unanimous decision.
Speaking to the Blanchardstown Gazette, Mulhuddart Boxing Club coach Gerry McDaid was full of praise for the young prospect.
“Young Chloe has been with us close to three years now and she really is a very good boxer. On Saturday, she was up against a good opponent but she looked really comfortable and dominated much of the fight. She was definitely a worthy winner on the day.”
McDaid, who looks after the coaching duties at the club alongside Jason Tang, is certain that the two time Irish champion will progress onto the Irish team in the future.
“I have no doubt that Chloe is good enough to represent Ireland and she has a great future ahead of her” said the Muhuddart coach.
The Dublin 15 club is the biggest in the surrounding areas and, with the addition of national senior elite champion and Ireland team boxer Dervla Duffy to the club recently, McDaid believes that the talented crop of young female fighters now have someone who they can not only look up to, but can look to emulate in the future.
“Dervla is training with us here full time now and the likes of Chloe and the other girls at the club train alongside her.
“We have a great group of talented girls here including Crystal Joyce and Sophie O’Sullivan who narrowly lost out to the Irish champion at the All Irelands.
“I hate to single out any of them because they are all very talented boxers and I think they all have big futures.
“The club is the only one in the area and we are happy with how all the girls and boys here are progressing.”
Mulhuddart were well represented at the girls’ finals with Krystal Joyce fighting in the 44kg category while Sophie O’Sullivan was involved in the 42kg class.
