Ava Henry got to show why she is deemed such a huge boxing prospect in the ring over the weekend.

The Dublin Dockland’s teenager claimed a fifth Irish title and a first at under-18 level without having to throw a punch earlier this month.

While she delighted in the success, the European Junior Champion and European Schools silver medal winner bemoaned the lack of ring time, arguing she trains to eventually fight and that she needs bouts for development.

Considering the fact the IABA are boycotting the World Championships at Elite level, and as a result are in conflict with the IBA, Henry, and her youth counterparts are unlikely to be afforded the chance to enter the European Youth Championship. That meant there was some concern with regard to getting minutes in the ring internationally, particularly for those, who like the Kilmore native, won Irish titles via a walkover.

However, the IABA sent a youth side to Assissi for a multi -nations tournament last weekend and Henry got to fight for the first time since she won European gold in Italy in October.

Henry didn’t just box, she boxed so well she won boxer of the tournament and picked up lightweight gold.

The competition involved Ireland, Italy, France, Ukraine, and Hungary, and was held in Assisi.

Team Ireland recorded a total of 14 wins over three days and came home with 3 golds 4 silvers 1 bronze.

Whitechurch’s Gabrielle Mongan was also among the medals.

Speaking before the trip a straight-talking Henry revealed wasn’t too pleased with winning her latest Irish title via walkover.

“It’s disheartening but a compliment too. There are girls going up and down weights trying to dodge what weight I entered at. “That is a confidence booster but I’ve been training twice a day since November for this competition so not fighting is disheartening.

“I personally think in Ireland I won’t get as many fights. It shouldn’t be the case, to be the best you’ve to fight the best and thats that.”
