Famous pitch invader Addison Whelan was back on stadium grass over the weekend, this time celebrating alongside the Shelbourne players as they completed the first leg of a potential league and cup double.

The 11-year-old did some serious GOAT herding last week, hitting the headlines when she got Ronaldo’s jersey after Ireland’s draw with Portugal on the same night sporting sensation Katie Taylor got in touch to arrange some training.

To top it all off the Corinthians boxer and Shels Under-13 starlet was present as Shelbourne claimed WNL title victory in the most dramatic of fashions on Saturday night.

In fact, Whelan was part of the wild celebrations as the Tolka Park side won their first title since 2016.

The northside side went into the final day with an outside chance of success. The TV cameras were Newcastle to film the coronation of Peamount United who only had to defeat Galway at home to make it three league titles in a row.

At 2-0 up after just 20 minutes had elapsed it appeared a strong Peas side were set to canter into the winner’s circle but Shels were given hope just before half-time as the Tribeswomen fired back to level.

The Drumcondra side then put one hand on the title when they trebled their lead after the turn and put the little finger of their other hand on the trophy when Galway completed the comeback and went a goal to the good in Greenogue.

However, just as it became apparent the Westerners were going to do Noel King’s (inset) side a massive favour – going 4-2 and 5-2 up in a sensational TV game- Wexford Youths threatened to ruin the party.

Bridesmaids in the last two seasons, Shelbourne had to survive a nervy final few final day minutes as Wexford got back within one with five minutes to go.

They held their nerve and emerged from one of the most dramatic league title races with the title and moved to within one win of a famous double.

To secure double success Shels will have to make it back-to-back wins over Youths. They meet Wexford in this weekend’s decider at the Tallaght Stadium with kick-off set for 17:30.

The eagerly awaited decider will be broadcast live on RTE 2.
