Blanchardstown Community gardai held a bike marking event in Clonee over the weekend.

The event took place in Littleplace on Saturday (July 29), with locals encouraged to register their bikes, which makes them easier to identify if stolen.

Gardai thanked all who turned out for the event, including Mayor of Fingal Mary McCamley.

As well as bike marking, there are a number of other measures that people can take to prevent bike thefts.

Cyclists are advised to spend between 10 and 20 per cent of the value on a lock for their bike. The bike should be locked tight to an immovable object and the lock should be kept off the ground.

It is better to lock a bike indoors where possible.

If this is not possible then cyclists are advised to lock a bike near CCTV wherever possible.

Bike owners should also not the serial number of their bike as this makes it easier to track if stolen.

Thefts should always be reported to the gardai.
