Dealz in Fonthill have had their appeal for a change of usage of their premises rejected, putting up to 40 local jobs in doubt.
Poundland Ltd, trading as Dealz, had applied to South Dublin County Council for a ‘change of use’ from warehouse to retail for its outlet at Fonthill Retail Park last year.
Their initial application was rejected and the company appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanala.
This appeal has also been rejected by the planning authority.
In its judgement, An Bord Pleanala said: “It is considered that the change of use to be retained would be contrary to policies and objectives aimed at restricting the role of retail warehousing to the retail of bulky goods and would seriously injure the vitality and viability of existing designated town centres and major retail centres in the vicinity.”
The judgement added that the change of use would materially contravene the Development Plan for the area and would be contrary to proper planning and sustainable development.
The decision comes despite more than 30 third-party submissions being made in support of Dealz.
Submissions were made by a host of public representatives, as well as neighbouring stores, including Power City, Right Style Furniture, Eurasia Supermarket and Cash & Carry Kitchens.
Dealz have been embroiled in a number of planning disputes with local authorities in recent years.
In December, Wexford County Council ruled that Dealz broke planning laws by opening a store on a site that was zoned for the sale of bulky goods in Clonard Retail Park.
Local councillor Francis Timmons (Ind) said the decision to close the Fonthill store was a blow to the area.
Cllr Timmons said: “It is very disappointing news from An Bord Pleanala that they have upheld South Dublin County Council’s decision to refuse Dealz retention at Unit 3 Fonthill Retail Park.
“There are 40 staff employed at this very popular store.”
The Dublin Gazette contacted Dealz but had not heard back by the time of going to print.
