Varadkar will not remove whip from Maria Bailey following swing fall case

by Gary Ibbotson

Fine Gael and Dun Laoghaire TD Maria Bailey is to be removed as Chairperson of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has announced.

However, the Taoisech said he will be not removing the party whip from Deputy Bailey “and is conscious of the devastating effect this saga has had on Deputy Bailey and her family in particular.

“She has endured considerable negative publicity, public criticism, and is now personally liable for significant legal and medical costs.”

“I hope this will send a clear message to other public representatives about taking such cases in future,” said the Taoiseach.

Deputy Bailey was the centre of controversy recently when it came to light she attempted to claim for damages from a Dublin hotel after she fell off a swing while drinking.

Taoiseach Varadkar added: “It is clear to me, that Deputy Bailey made numerous errors of judgement in handling this matter from the outset, during and even after she had withdrawn the case.”
