2,000 nurses march in Blackrock over fee

AT LEAST 2,000 nurses and midwives from all over Ireland protested in Blackrock this week over recent registration fee rises by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation general secretary Liam Doran told The Gazette: “We pay €100 as a fee but will not pay €150 to a board that does not enjoy the confidence of our members.” The €50 increase was to defray potential legal costs incurred by nurses, he said.
The board said: “We regret having to raise the annual retention fee but reiterate the need for this increase to ensure NMBI can meet its statutory obligations.”
Cllr Victor Boyhan (Ind) said members of the public marched with the nurses.
