Penneys in Rathfarnham is closing its doors for the last time early next year, after 47 years in business.
The company said the decision had been made due to the “close proximity” of other stores in Nutgrove and Dundrum, adding that “the lease is due to expire.”
“Penneys confirms that its Rathfarnham Shopping Centre store, located in Dublin 14, will close in February 2020.
“All employees in Penneys Rathfarnham have been informed and everyone has been offered relocation opportunities at nearby Dublin stores.
“Customers of the Rathfarnham store are well serviced by the Nutgrove store (also in Rathfarnham) which was completely refurbished in 2017, and nearby stores Dundrum and Liffey Valley, due to their close proximity,” they said.
Local TD John Lahart (FF) said it’s a massive blow for the area.
“… Massive blow for the Rathfarnham Shopping Centre and surrounding area.
“Penneys is a huge draw to the shopping centre, and I will be doing all I can to ensure that a new tenant is found for the premises ASAP.”
Locals took to social media to express their feelings on the news.
One wrote “That is so sad and a massive blow…”
Another said: “Some of my friends had summer jobs there in the 1970’s. I think the premises moved. It was where Tesco is now!!”
While another said: “Very sad to see this!”
