Planning permission lodged for The Olympia Theatre suggests that the iconic Dame Street venue may be renamed.
In lodging an application for new signage, the owners of the Olympia suggest that a sponsor’s name will be included in the title of the theatre going forward.
This wouldn’t be the first name change for the venue, however, as it originally started life as the Star of Erin Music Hall in 1879. It then went through several name changes, before being named The Olympia Theatre in 1923.
However, nearly 100 years later, there could be another slight adjustment to the name of the beloved venue.
It is understood that the Olympia Theatre will remain in the name of the venue, but with the addition of a sponsors name on new signage. This would be similar to the name change of the 3Arena or the Aviva Stadium.
According to the Sunday Times, the owner of The Olympia plans to “invest substantially” in the theatre in the coming years, saying the move is “part of the overall strategy of providing an additional and sustainable income stream”.
The Olympia is one of Dublin’s best known venues, and has played host to several legendary musicians, comedians and theatre productions.
