January nominations for Lord Mayor’s Award now open

The Lord Mayor of Dublin is reminding Dubliners that nominations for this month’s Lord Mayor’s Awards are now open.

The awards, which normally take place annually, are currently taking place monthly to honour and thank those who have worked on the frontline during the Covid-19 pandemic.

January’s category is ‘Retail Staff’, and nominations will close on January 16.

The Sinn Féin Group on Dublin City Council have said that they have nominated former workers of Debenhams for the award, as they continue to strike after being made redundant in April 2020.

Sinn Féin City Councillor Daithí Doolan said: “Debenhams workers deserve the Lord Mayor’s award. They have been on strike since April 2020. 1,500 staff were made redundant by Debenhams bosses in an email at the start of the first Covid lockdown.

“The workers have a total 10,000 years experience. But the company have refused to pay one cent in redundancy. This is unjust and unacceptable.

“The workers continue to inspire the peoole of Dublin with their resilience and commitment to justice. The workers have picketed 24 hours a day 7 days week since. This is one of the longest strikes in Irish industrial history. These workers are not on strike for a wage increase or better conditions but simply to get their legal redundancy.

“The Sinn Féin Group on Dublin City Council firmly believe the Debenhams workers should be honoured with a Lord Mayor’s award. This award would send out a very clear message to Debenhams.

“Pay the workers the redundancy they deserve and resolve this dispute once and for all.”
