Controversial plans to rezone green land to allow for the construction of thousands of homes in Kingswood have been shelved.
The site at Newlands Farm between Tallaght and Clondalkin is currently zoned for agricultural uses, while plans put forward by Hibernia REIT would have seen approximately 3,500 homes built on the site.
However, at the recent South Dublin County Council’s County Development Plan meeting on June 24 where councillors turned down the plans.
The Kingswood Heights Residents Association reacted positively to the announcement, saying they were ‘overwhelmed and heartened’ by the engagement from the local community.
They said in a statement: “We are delighted with this result and want to say a big thank you to everyone who sent an email, signed a petition or rang their councillors. The councillors were all in agreement that they were overwhelmed and heartened by the engagement from the community on both sides of this matter.
“We understand some people in the community will be disappointed. We agree that the area needs sports facilities, but we believe the right decision was reached today and now we will be supporting Cllr (Mick) Duff’s motion for a specific local objective to commit to a sports hub in Kingswood.”
Meanwhile South Dublin County Council confirmed that a number of meetings were held with councillors last month over the Kingswood plans.
“Prior to the South Dublin Draft Development Plan 2022-2028 being put out on public consultation, a number of special development plan meetings were held at which the councillors considered the plan to go on display. At those meetings, held between 17th to 24th June 2021, the councillors considered motions which sought to retain the current rural zoning designation on the lands and other motions which sought to change the zoning to provide for housing and associated development.
“The councillors, being advised by the executive that there were sufficient zoned lands within the county to meet the required housing targets, voted to keep the current rural zonings on the lands. As a result, the Draft Plan does not include for the development of housing on the Kingswood lands,” they said.
