FRIENDS and work colleagues of a dad-of-one who suffered a brain aneurysm last year are set to run 4,000km to help aid his recovery.

Engineer Jacek Bedkowski, 41, who is originally from Poland and lives in Ashtown while working in Dun Laoghaire with his wife Joanna and 10-year-old daughter Julia, suffered a brain aneurysm in November.

His wife Joanna told Dublin Gazette: “I thought he was having a seizure, I’d never seen anything like it before but I knew something was wrong.”

Jacek was rushed to hospital and has undergone numerous brain surgeries to stop and prevent further bleeding. He remains in hospital and still has a long road of recovery ahead of him.

“Jacek is doing a little better, he is more communicative now. He is in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dublin, he is due to start therapy soon and we hope this will help him,” said Joanna.

She explained that due to Covid-19 restrictions it has been difficult to visit Jacek as regularly as the family would like.

Joanna added:“It’s been a difficult and traumatic time for us all, Jacek sometimes gets confused. Covid-19 has made everything harder, we visited him on Christmas Eve but we had to spend Christmas without him which was hard.”

Jacek works with PUNCH Consulting Engineers in Dun Laoghaire and is very popular amongst his colleagues.

“I didn’t realise how popular he was until his work colleagues got in contact for the GoFundMe. Jacek is very hardworking, a patient and friendly person. He’s quite shy and private so I was surprised a few days ago when he said he wanted to share the GoFundMe campaign link with everyone he knows,” said Joanna.

For the month of March 2021, Jacek’s friends and work colleagues will race in teams virtually covering the distance from his workplace in Dun Laoghaire to the town he grew up in Raciborz, Poland and back – a total of 4,000km.

They are aiming to reach their target of €20,000 and the fund has already reached over €10,000.

According to Joanna, she has also created a team of her and Jacek’s friends to take part in the virtual race this month.
