Westmoreland Street brought to standstill by gang attack

A number of youths were caught on video attacking delivery drivers on Westmoreland Street in the capital late on Wednesday night.

In a video posted on social media, a number of young people are seen picking up the bikes of the drivers and throwing them, blocking traffic on the busy south side thoroughfare including a number of buses.

It is believed that the gang had been throwing eggs at the drivers, before the incident escalated further. The incident took place at before 10pm on Wednesday evening.

One of the youths is seen removing his shirt and taunting the drivers to fight him, whilst the others continue throwing bikes as horrified onlookers watch.

The incident took place just yards from Pearse Street Garda Station, with Gardai attending the incident at around 10pm, with one man in his 40’s arrested.

On 98FM’s Dublin Talks on Friday morning, a number of callers said they fear going into the city because of incidents like this one, saying that they feel anti-social behaviour in the capital is on the rise.

Food delivery service Deliveroo are investigating the incident. In a statement, they said: “Riders work hard to bring customers amazing meals and should be able to do so without being subject to harassment or threats of violence.”
