Production on a short film set in Tallaght is under way, with its crew working hard to maintain social distancing while delivering a heart-warming tale of a young Dublin dancer.
Actress Charlene Gleeson, who played the lead role of Sarah in Emmet Kirwan’s show, Sarah and Steve, has teamed up with actress Kate Brennan to bring their short film ‘Cherry’ to life, with filming due to begin this weekend.
‘Cherry’ is based on Gleeson’s own experience of the competitive ballroom world and tells the story of a young girl from Tallaght working to take home the crown in a freestyle dance competition.
“It’s a story about how we all benefit from having a little competition in our lives, how it keeps us all on our toes,” Gleeson told Dublin Gazette. “It’s based on Cherry and her mother, and how her mother wants the best for her daughter.
“It’s just a really heart-warming story for both parents and kids.”
Charlene and Kate managed to call in a few favours for help with the film.
“Cherry’s in a league of her own, meaning she isn’t really competing with anyone, but her mam still pushes her to be the very best she can be.
She said: “I learned to direct and act while I was studying at the Gaiety, which has been a massive help. I produced another short film, 100 Degrees, about seven years ago, but it’s very different trying to do everything with social distancing!
“It’s great though, because everyone in the [film] industry helps each other as best as we can. We’ve had people offering to help us or have introduced us to people that are willing to help with sound or assistant directing, it’s been really great.”
Both women are working hard to bring the film to fruition and have set up a GoFundMe to assist with the cost of insurance, as well as funding additional equipment they’ll need.
With over €2,000 raised in two days Charlene said: “It’s great to see people are supporting the arts and creativity, even at a difficult time.”
The project is now just €400 shy of its total goal. For more information on Cherry, or to donate to the GoFundMe, visit: https://gf.me/u/ymn7yy.
