Sadness at death of Balbriggan swimmer

by Rose Barrett

Balbriggan swimmer, Maciej Orchowski (42) lost his battle for life last weekend,  having been recently rescued by emergency services whilst swimming at the King Strand area, near the Martello Tower

Known locally as ‘Magic’, the Polish native swam several times a day at Balbriggan beach, and was a member of the Selkies Swimming Club.

The father of three was swimming with close friends on Wednesday, April 22 when he got into difficulty.  Strong winds and choppy waters prevented a lifebuoy reaching him.

Gardaí arrived to assist before emergency air services lifted him from the sea. He was further given emergency medical attention on the beach before being taken to Beaumont Hospital where he remained in the care of the ICU Department.

Sadly, Mr Orchowski died on Saturday morning, much to the heartbreak of his family, and the wider Balbriggan community.

He is survived by his wife Iwona, and children Veronika, Mikolaj and Agata. May he rest in peace, amen.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family: see https://gofund.me/4c8950f6 to donate.
