Robert Cashell has organised a fundraiser for the old Balbriggan schoolhouse, writes Rose Barrett.
Due to its historical importance, St George’s National School and Schoolhouse is listed on Fingal County Council’s Record of Protected Structures under the County Development Plan.
Located at Hampton St, it was established in 1859 and served the community well as a national school. The growth of Balbriggan with a very young population resulted in a new school on the Naul Road in 2009.
The old schoolhouse now hosts Cairde services and previously, Failte Balbriggan. Cairde provides assistance for newcomers to get acclimatised to living in Ireland. Various other services also use the premises for their activities. The hall was the base for
St Patrick’s Brass & Reed Band along with the local dramatic society.
The roof of both buildings needs to be replaced and hopefully they will last another 160 years!
“The total cost of the project is in the region of €165,000, assuming nothing too bad is found once the slates come off!” wrote Robert on the GoFundMe page. If you’d like to see the building repaired/roofed, donations are welcome at https://www.gofundme.com/f/old-school-roof
