A new wheelchair specifically designed for beach use has been created for people with disabilities or mobility restrictions.
This is the third addition to Fingal County Council‘s Beach Wheelchair Scheme for 2017.
The Hippocampe Beach Wheelchair can be booked through The Waterside House Hotel, a stone’s throw away from Balcarrick Beach.
It is completely free of charge to use the service but the Council urges people to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
The Beach Wheelchair Scheme was launched in July of 2016 to allow visitors with disabilities or mobility restrictions to have easier access to and enjoyment of Dublin beaches.
Beach wheelchairs are also available to visitors at South Strand, Skerries and Velvet Strand, Portmarnock. They can be accessed at the lifeguards huts in both locations.
Chairs are available in July and August from 11am-7pm, Monday to Sunday.
A spokesperson for the Council advises wheelchair users to be accompanied by a helper as lifeguards at Balcarrick Beach and staff from The Waterside House Hotel are not in a position to help them.
‘Please be aware, that it is important for the wheelchair user to have a helper in attendance as Hotel Staff or Lifeguards are not in a position to help the user either into or out of the wheelchair.’
