Wednesday last saw Late Late host Ryan Tubridy visit the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP) Christmas Warehouse in Sean McDermott Street, Dublin.

The popular TV and radio presenter dropped in to view the food and toys being prepared for the volunteers to deliver to many thousands of people in the SVP East region (Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow).

He also met a number of SVP volunteers who spoke about the activities of the Society and the current demand for help in terms of food, energy and other cost of living supports and the help provided to third level students through the SVP Education Bursary

In the full year, 2021, SVP received 191,000 requests for help. That figure had been reached already this year by the end of last month.

Rose McGowan, SVP National President, said:

“It was a pleasure to welcome Ryan Tubridy who is an honorary member of SVP and to have him hear at first hand from our volunteers about the real difficulties so many people  find themselves in throughout the year.

“In the coming months, the cost of living crisis will hit different households in different ways, particularly with the rising costs of food, energy and housing. Add in Christmas costs with the current bad weather and you can see how difficult life will be for those on fixed incomes, whether that income comes through the State or from low-paid employment.

“Those hardest hit will include one parent-families, low-income workers; households on fixed social welfare incomes; low-income households in rural areas; people with disabilities and their carers. They are all facing impossible choices this Christmas and into the new year.

“We are asking people to please donate whatever they can spare at either a local collection, online  or over the phone to help people who are struggling now and will continue to struggle through this winter and into the new year,” she concluded.
