SOS – Save Our Sea – is hosting a peaceful protest on Saturday, June 17 next by the Martello Tower in Malahide, writes Rose Barrett.

The protest will commence at 10am and is organised by two swimming clubs who have united to form ‘SOS’

As covered in last week’s Gazette, Balbriggan has especially been dogged with repeated pollution issues which often renders the Front Strand closed to swimmers during the season.

“The sea water in Balbriggan has not been meeting the European standard for safe swimming for a number of years. They continuously have ‘No Swim’ notices’ in place, and once again our beautiful swans ‘Romeo and Juliet’ have had to be rescued and taken to Kildare Wildlife Sanctuary to recuperate from diesel ingestion after yet another oil spillage,” said SOS.

“If other beaches along the east coast can achieve a blue flag, why can’t Balbriggan? We are actively working with groups to achieve this, we are gathering momentum and have been in the media over the last few weeks. We plan on holding a peaceful protest on Saturday, June 17 to further highlight our concerns and demand action from Fingal County Council.” Commencing at 10am on Saturday, June 17, all welcome to attend.
