A play therapy programme aimed at helping children to cope with trauma associated with the housing crisis will be extended to eleven schools in Ballymun in north Dublin.

Róisín Hickey, Chair of the Ballymun Network of School Principals and Principal of Our Lady of Victories Boys’ National School in Ballymun, claimed that the programme has identified 300 children who are in need of play therapy.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Drivetime programme, she explained that this method of therapy enables children to deal with trauma and navigate difficult emotions.

She highlighted that homelessness for children can be a huge trauma in their lives and claimed that the pilot scheme had indicated a marked improvement among participating children.
