A student from Trinity College, Dublin died following an accident on the Potomac River near Washington DC last Sunday.
Ella Mills was on a kayaking trip with Columbia University Whitewater Kayaking Club when the incident occured.
Ella was studying at Columbia University as part of a dual BA programme, having only arrived in the US a few weeks ago.
A spokesperson for TCD said: “Trinity College Dublin community is grieving the tragic loss of Ella Mills, an English Studies student who passed away on 17 September last. Her family, friends and classmates are in our minds at this difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam.”
Columbia University President Minouche Shafik said this was heartbreaking for her family and friends, a tragic accident.
The Dean at Columbia said: “Ella had a love for learning, was intellectually curious, and passionate about literature.”
Tributes have been paid to the young student who was described as a literary scholar.
RTÉ also noted she was a member of the DU Players, the TCD Tennis Club, and the Philosophical Society, among many others.
Columbia University will provide counselling services to students following her death; a vigil was held yesterday evening. The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is providing support and assistance to the family. Ella Mills, may she rest in peace, amen.
