Nineteen traders formerly operating in Glasnevin at a popular farmer’s market moved literally around the corner last week, to a new venue, only 200 yards away at 13 Blackwater Road.

Now trading as Glasnevin Food Market, last Saturday’s trade was brisk and people were delighted to see some of their favourite chocolatiers, bakers, and meat vendors!

Among those who are now up and running on Blackwater Road are MUD Bakery, Spring Cottage Organic Farm, The Good Crop Company,  Sourdough Sisters, The Crepe Escape, The Patty Wagon 79, The Purple Pantry, Janet’s, Killua Castle, Charlene’s Wholesome Pantry, The Proper Chocolate Company, Sarah & Olive,The Green Angel Trading Company and McEvoy Market Garden.

Following the first day of the new pop-up market, the group posted: “What a day we had yesterday – a huge thanks to all our customers and traders. The pop-up wouldn’t have been possible without the huge team of volunteers that have been working around the clock since Monday morning. We look forward to welcoming you all again tomorrow, April 13!”

Several months ago, before Christmas, traders were notified that a new owner had acquired the market location and stall holders at Glasnevin Farmer’s Market were given notice to quit. However, the traders were given a stay, but have now moved to the new pop-up destination on Blackwater Road, and judging from last week’s success, clearly, customers love the new location. Normal trading times tomorrow resumes from 8.30am-2.30pm.

Three remaining members of the former Glasnevin FM who have reformed as Glasnevin Farmer’s Market CLG and will begin trading from tomorrow at Buddy’s in Ballymun.

Buddys Farmers Market is a popular market near IKEA and among the traders moving to join forces with Buddy’s is the Whole Hogg, a very popular free range pig breeder in Meath, along with Donegan’s Seafood and Ryan’s Farm are

Speaking to the Dublin Gazette. Peter Whelan of The Whole Hogg and other traders were sorry to move from the Slaney Close venue in Glasnevin where they have traded for the past 12 to 15 years.

Peter noted: “Myself and fellow stallholders set up a company called Glasnevin Farmer Market CLG, with the view to negotiate a new formal tenancy with the new owners (Blacklion Reat Estate).”

“With no income to pay our mortgage and van repayment etc, we frantically tried to find somewhere to trade and supply our regular customers with their weekly local produce. The traders I represent all depend on this weekly income to survive!

“Despite reaching out to several politicians, TDs and councillors, among them Paschal Donohue a sitting minister who frequented our market, but all to no avail. It us a disgrace that this community market was allowed to close up!

While 19 traders chose to move around the corner to Blackwater Road, Mr Whelan and two others chose not to.

“As needs must, a call out to a neighbouring farmers market “Buddy’s “, and we are excited to announce that, as and from tomorrow, Saturday April 13, Glasnevin Farmers Market CLG will join forces with Buddys Farmer’s Market. Buddy’s is only a few minutes from where the original market traded, and is located in Ballymun near IKEA just off the M50.”

Maurice Matthews of the Seed Potato Company who Buddy’s FM said:
“Peter and the guys approached me to discuss how we could work together to keep the people of this region in a supply of their artisan food. I was only delighted to help these traders, who have served the people of Glasnevin and surrounding areas for many years. The timing was perfect, as we were actively looking for extra quality traders and growers to expand our existing market.

“I’m really very excited about this new venture, a wonderful, outdoor food artisan market this weekend! It is a prime example of how community works. I must commend these artisan producers for the tireless work they put in to deliver high quality produce to the people of Dublin every week.”

Buddy’s Farmer’s Marmet trades from 8.30am till 2.30pm every Saturday. The range of produce is vast, from farm reared beef, lamb, pork as well as fresh fish, raw deserts, gourmet pies and sausage rolls, coffee and sourdough breads. Also local vegetables mainly grown in north county Dublin in season. This is just a tiny part of a wide range of goods that will be available tomorrow, and every Saturday at the venue in Ballymun.
