‘Swellfest’, a super free sports and wellness event, Mountjoy Square tomorrow, 12-6pm

NEIC, Dublin North East Inner City and Dublin City Council are bringing  Swellfest – a brand new, FREE Sports and Wellness Festival – to Dublin’s Mountjoy Square on Saturday next, September 9 writes Rose Barrett.

Swellfest offers a packed programme of diverse sports activities and engaging discussion with a selection of special guests plus a delicious healthy food offering in the Georgian landscaped park of Mountjoy Square.  

The event has been designed to inspire young and old alike in the area to try some new activities, as well as building important community connections. There’s a FAI football challenge zone featuring football table tennis, panna cage and junior academy zone, special guest appearances and chats with players from Dublin GAA ladies and and men’s teams.

There will also be demos from POUNDFIT, a full body cardio-jam session while playing the drums. Learn how to get fit the party way with Zumba from Move Me Ireland, a Latin inspired dance workout and some Reggae Yoga with Reeta.

There’s also Tag Rugby with Leinster Rugby & NEIC partnership, gymnastics, basketball demos and workshops from the Trojan NEIC Basketball Club and GAA nursery with Scoil Ui Chonaill,, a GAA Handball court, a visit from Cycling Ireland and DublinBikePolo, and boxing with Olympian Emmet Brennan ad 6-time National Champion Jordan Moore of FightR Dublin,  showing the art of contact and non-contact formats.

Calisthenics Ireland’s professional athletes will be on hand to demonstrate how to enjoy street workouts by using the calisthenics bars found in most public parks as well as providing a Muscle Up and Handstand Workshop. Dublin Parkour will amaze with their demos and workshops and there’s a bungee trampoline for some extra fun!

Little ones are sure to be kept busy with loads to see and do including kids aerobics with Jitterbug Jackson, a silent headphones meditation with Michael Ryan, Yoga for Kids with much loved local instructor Erica, Movement and meditation for Kids with Anna Walsh.

The Little Fitness programme, inclusive for all children and families living in emergency accommodation, will also be on site. Get a flavour of Brazil with Mundo Capoeira & Morro 16 will bring a little of Rio carnival to the proceedings or enjoy the superb 8-piece The New Brass Kings plus multicultural dance collaboration with Go Dance for Change. 

Over in the Swell Talks Tent, Jen Healy will be talking all things Tapping, while Chloe McHugh from Sonas Sounds will present her Sound Bath. Hear from author and founder of the Menopause Success Summit Catherine O’Keeffe on Demystifying the Menopause or come and enjoy the panel talk from Hersport.ie, empowering women in sport all over the country.

Swellfest introduces DCC’s outdoor mobile child sensory unit which will be available for children who identify as neurodiverse.
