Sculpture Dublin is an ambitious Dublin City Council initiative designed to put sculpture at the heart of communities around Dublin, and earlier this year it announced plans for new sculpture commissions around the city.
It is now inviting communities in Ballyfermot, Finglas, Raheny, Smithfield and Terenure to take part in creative projects that will be developed in connection with the new sculptures set to come to their localities.
This invitation is part of a wider local public engagement programme which is underway to raise awareness of the new commissions, and of the existing sculpture in the city.
Sculpture Dublin is also connecting with schools, libraries, local history societies and DCC Local Area Offices to raise awareness of the new commissions and the sculpture commissioning process, and to stimulate conversations about how public art enhances our surroundings and enriches our lives.
Speaking about this invitation to local community groups, Ray Yeates, City Arts Officer, Dublin City Council said: “The mission of Sculpture Dublin is to engage the public with sculpture in a new way and we are particularly excited about working with communities that will be getting new sculpture, so that we can involve them in the creative process at an early stage.
“We strongly encourage local residents and community groups in the areas of Ballyfermot, Finglas, Raheny, Smithfield and Terenure to get in touch with us so that we can involve them in creative engagement activity round the new commissions coming to their area in the next year,” he said.
Sculpture Dublin is also inviting people around Dublin to give their thoughts on public sculpture and what it means to them in a short online survey on the ‘Commissions’ pages of its website www.sculpturedublin.ie
The initiative, which was launched by Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu in July, has also created a rich repository of information about sculpture in Dublin on its website, including a series of articles, details of sculpture exhibitions in cultural institutions, and information about existing public sculpture around the city.
