Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan caused a shock today by announcing that he is stepping down from his leadership role.

It is understood that he will remain  as Minister for Transport, Climate, Environment and Communications until the upcoming general election which is expected to be called later this year despite protests from the Taoiseach that it would not be until the Spring of 2025.

Ryan, who  has been the Green leader for 13 years since   he took over from John Gormley in 2011,  has made his decision following his party’s disappointing showings in both the European and Local Elections two weeks ago.
