Plans for the Royal Canal greenway route from Maynooth to Docklands which will run through west Fingal will begin a public consultation stage next month.
A public information day will take place in Blanchardstown Civic Offices on Tuesday, March 5, from 11.30am to 7.30pm where engineers will outline their proposal.
An information leaflet is being dropped to around 9,000 households within the catchment area this week and letters have been posted to properties that could be affected by the emerging preferred route.
The National Transport Authority (NTA) and Fingal County Council have been examining design options for the greenway for some time.
Once the public consultation process is complete, the NTA are prepared for a lengthy planning process with work on the project not expected to begin before late 2020.
Clonsilla-based Cllr Tania Doyle (Ind) told Dublin Gazette: “This is an important project which is long overdue and I have fully supported it since it was first proposed.
“I have no doubts whatsoever that the greenway will benefit the community in so many ways.
“I would strongly urge surrounding communities to attend the briefing if at all possible and make an observation on any proposal you have for this project – a project to enhance our community, right on our doorstep.”
Last month in response to a question from Fianna Fail TD Jack Chambers, NTA deputy chief executive Hugh Creegan outlined progress on the route, to date, whilst noting environmental and engineering constraints.
