Cllr Adrian Henchy (FF) applauds the recent announcement that approval in principle has been granted for the refurbishment of 12 vacant cottages on Portrane Avenue, located at St Ita’s Hospital Campus in Portrane.
“Anyone who is familiar with Portrane or St Ita’s Hospital Campus will know the houses as you enter the complex, and will know how long they have been vacant,” said Cllr Henchy.
Born and raised on Portrane Avenue, he noted it “was a wonderful place to live and still is to this day.”
He continued: “Historically, these houses were reserved for staff working at St Ita’s from nursing, to catering, engineering and other disciplines and for many, these were their first family homes. Credit must be given to the existing residents of Portrane Avenue who have long campaigned for and called for the restoration and regeneration of their neighbouring houses.
“Along with many local campaigners, and with the support of Minister for Housing, Darragh O Brien TD, we are determined to tackle the scourge that is housing vacancy.”
Stating it was one of the first questions to both Fingal County Council and the HSE when he was elected to the council in 2014, Cllr Henchy noted progress to date has been “frustratingly slow” but welcomes last Thursday’s announcement, and commended the HSE and FCC who collaborated with the Minister, his department and Cllr Henchy on this matter.
“This is very positive news for the proud Portrane community with St Ita’s at the heart of the village. Hopefully, the regeneration of these beautiful family homes along Portrane Avenue will also be a catalyst for future regeneration and reuse of the large scale magnificent Red brick buildings across St Ita’s,” he concluded.
