Cllr Joan Hopkins (SD) praised the residents who for one afternoon last Sunday took back a street and handed it over to their children to play, writes Rose Barrett.

The Playful Streets pilot is unprecedented in Ireland, opening streets for play to build community spirit and enhance the health and well-being of local children, by encouraging them to play outdoors. Baldoyle was one of only 11 neighbourhoods chosen to take part in this pilot which was hosted on Sunday afternoon on the cul de sac between Parker House and Stapolin House.

“Playing on the street outside your home was an integral part of our childhood up until private car ownership exploded in the 1990’s,” said Cllr Hopkins. “Our parents could rest easy knowing we were safe and close by, while we gained independence, learned how to socialise, manage risk, explore our surroundings.

“I’d like to thank Fingal County Council for facilitating this pilot project in #Baldoyle. There will be one in Portmarnock at the end of the month. Hopefully, we can normalise these activities and make them part of everyday life again!” said Cllr Hopkins.
