Meet Mr Walshington

Last month I had the privilege of visiting the White House. It was a very special place, steeped in history, where every American President has lived except for George Washington.

Furthermore, I was also afforded the opportunity of meeting Congressman Joe Kennedy III.

Congressman Kennedy is the grandson of former US Attorney General, Robert Fitzgerald Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968 when seeking the Democratic Party nomination for President.

His grand-uncle was former President John Fitzgerald Kennedy who was assassinated in Dallas in 1963.

I spoke to the Congressman about the plight of the undocumented Irish in the United States. I told him the Irish people have always had a great affinity for America and they want to make a real contribution.

He assured me that he was working with both Democrats and Republicans to help the millions of undocumented workers across the United States.

He also said that he has a great fondness for Ireland. He even has a certificate of Irish heritage hanging on the wall in his office.

There’s talk around Washington DC that the Congressman may potentially be seen as a Vice Presidential running mate for New Jersey Senator, Cory Booker, who is hotly tipped to seek the Democratic nomination for President in 2020.

This would be great for Ireland as it would further enhance the strong historical links between our countries.
