A LOCAL politician has called for an efficient and fair pay-parking system for the village after new figures showed that Lucan was the worst place in Dublin for getting parking fines.
Fine Gael councillor William Lavelle said that while parking fines overall were down month on month, he was appalled at the “draconian nature of parking enbforcement by certain individual, overzealous parking wardens”.
A total of 1,581 parking tickets were issued on Lucan’s Main Street in 2016, according to figures obtained by the Times last week, while in Dublin city, Mespil Road along the canal was the worst spot – with 915 cars getting clampe .
Responding to the figues for Lucan, Cllr Lavelle told The Gazette: “I note recent media reports that a total of 1,581 parking tickets were issued on Main Street in Lucan last year.
“While I do not have breakdown of the figures by street in Lucan Village, overall figures issued to me last month by SDCC indicate that the total number of parking fines issued in Lucan Village in 2016 was 2,519.
“However, it should be noted that the monthly average number of fines issued fell by 20% in the months following changes made to the pay parking system last August. These changes required all vehicles to display a ticket even if availing of 30 minutes free parking.
“But, on average there are still about nine fines issued every day in Lucan Village. This leads to continued complaints from local businesses and people visiting Lucan Village
“We need a pay-parking system that is efficient in ensuring turnover rover of spaces but which is also fair for all users.
“I am appalled at the draconian nature of parking enforcement by certain individual over-zealous parking wardens.
“On foot of recent complaints SDCC have engaged with the company operating the parking warden service in relation to repeated complaints about parking wardens.
“SDCC have also ordered new information signage.
“The SDCC Transport Policy Committee, which I am Chairman of, will be conducting a further review of the pay-parking system later this year.”
