With Ireland to kick off their Rugby World Cup campaign in Bordeaux sunshine this afternoon against Romania, Lucan native Rob Curley is putting his culinary skills to good use, and will be cooking in France during the World Cup 2023.
Chef Rob runs Slemish Market Supper Club, a pop-up dining experience based in Ballymena, Co Antrim, but during the World Cup, he will be cooking with Chef Gilles Hemart for a multicourse four hands collaboration dining experience in Les Gens Heureux Tours on Tuesday, September 12.
This will be a fantastic dining experience of Irish and French food in Tours City centre. A real showcase of the best of Irish and French skill, creativity, passion drive and cooking just like both Irish and French Rugby teams.
Les Gens Heureux bistro will be running a fanzone for every match whilst serving beers& Irish Spice bag with a Touraine twist for fans to enjoy from 8/9/23 to 21/10/23 There will be live music from the “Life on Mars” band on 20/9/23.

Les Gens Heureux is located a few steps from Place Plumereau, a vibrant square in the old town of Tours where you’ll find cafes, bars and restaurants in 15th century timber framed houses. Produce will be sourced from “Les Halle’s de Tours” food market which showcases artisan cheese, breads, charcuterie, local fruit, vegetables, fish and meats; a real treat for taste buds and the eyes!
Rob himself grew up in grew up in Hillcrest, Lucan and now lives in Ballymena, NI.
“I love running the Slemish Market Supper Club – Supper Clubs are held in venues all over Ballymena, Antrim , North and South Ireland, Spain and now France.
“The menu for the collaboration with Les Gens Heureux Bistro in Tours France will be half Irish and half French using the best ingredients and techniques from both countries with some rugby inspired dishes as well,” said Rob, who is an avid sports enthusiast and his youth, he played Gaelic football for Lucan Sarsfields GAA with our own Sports Editor, Aaron Dunne.
However, he has a proud record working in the fine dining industry – with over 20 years experience in the restaurant trade having worked previously in L’Ecrivain (1 Michelin star restaurant) and the renowned Shanahans On The Green in Dublin.
Rob won “Best Emerging Irish Cuisine” for Co Antrim at the Irish Restaurant Awards in 2018, 2019 and “Ulster Local Food Hero” in 2016. His supper club was nominated for “Best local food story” at the NI Food & Drink Awards in 2017 and “Best private and club dining” at the Irish Restaurant Awards in 2017. Rob represented Ireland at the World Tapas Championship in Valladolid Spain in 2018 and is a Co-founder of the All-Ireland Tapas Championship, along with representing Ireland at the World Paella Day Cup 2021 in Valencia and The World Patatas Bravas Championship 2022 in Palencia Spain.
