Loughshinny and Rush Historical Society talk, this Thursday, June 29 June on Fr Jon Gowan CM, entitled “Zealous priest and sterling patriotic Irish man”, writes Rose Barrett.

The presentation of the Skerries born priest will be hosted at the Strand Bar, commencing 8pm. Historian Sr Vivienne Keely CHF will deliver the talk.

“When I was asked to research the life of Fr Gowan, co-founder of the Sisters of the Holy Faith and a proud Skerries man, I realised that about all I know of him! The research revealed an ardent Young Ireland supporter, a mean handball player and one dedicated to the provision of famine relief in the Roundwood area.

“As a Vincentian priest, he collaborated with Margaret Alylward in a boarding out system for children in need of care and insetting up a network of primary schools for poor children. He enjoyed a national reputation as a retreat-giver for priests. All in all, a far richer personality and career than I had imagined” she said.

All welcome, 8pm at the Strand Bar, Thursday, June 29.
